Can a fiber shake affect your breast milk?

My daughter is breast feeding and she likes to drink the Arbonne fiber shakes. But her baby, not quite 2 months old, has not had a poop for 3 days. Would the fiber shake be causing this?

  1. No! Milk just doesn't work like that. You don't blame your bowel movements on cows' diets, right...? And it's normal and healthy for a breastfed baby to go a while -- even up to a week -- without a poop. Relax! "Breastmilk is made from what passes into mom's blood, not what is in her stomach or digestive tract..." http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/gassybaby.html "Dietary Fiber / Bulk Forming Laxatives This type of laxative is not absorbed via the GI tract and thus should not pose a problem for breastfeeding mothers." http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/laxatives.html#fiber
  2. yea it can! when i nursed my daughter i got on a smoothie kick and my baby had bad diareah and a rash from it :( so i had to stop drinking it,...but fiber shouldnt cause diareah i wouldnt think isnt it supposed to soften and ease stools?? well look up on line or call the peds doc and they can tell you any info you need to know! BTW breast fed babies (soley breastfed and no supliments) sometimes only have one stool a week its completly normal and nothing to be worried about if the baby goes like 5-6 days with nothing try using a childrens supository cut it in half length wise and then cut it in half again and that should get stuff moving for her! (this is what the doc told me to do with my baby) and the pharmasist also good luck
  3. No, milk production isn't affected like that. If the baby is exclusively breastfed, it is normal for the baby to go up to 10 days without a poop, as breastmilk is used very efficiently by the body, with little waste.
  4. A baby, even a breastfed baby should be pooping 1 or more times a day. And yes, things you eat effect your milk. One of the more extreme cases I heard of was a baby death from the mother taking cocaine while nursing. In my own experience...my daughter became constipated when I began to take St. John's Wort. (I had to quit taking it until she was weaned.)
  5. I think it can! Right after i had my son i was having trouble going because of the stiches. So like an idiot i took a mild laxative and i was breastfeeding. It had the reverse effect on my son. He got stopped up and had a horrible belly ache. I wouldnt take anything like that while breastfeeding!
  6. I second Christina - he needs a baby glycerin suppository if he hasn't done a smelly for three days, it'll make him do a big one in minutes!
