For Vegetables

Are root vegetables hard on your digestive system?

I was talking with my cousins yesterday about replacing meat and they said that its more expensive to buy all vegetables than to mix vegetables with meat. I disagreed saying you could buy root vegetables and they said root vegetables were hard on ur digestive tract. Was wondering how much truth there is to that.

  1. I thought they helped your digestive system because of the fibre they contain, but im not an expert.
  2. Probably depends on how well you chew them, cook them, & what other enzymatic like foods you eat them with. In short eating meats costs you more not only financially, but health wise, environmentally, as well as spiritually.
  3. No, I have not found root vegetables to be hard on my digestive system. oh please the vegetarian diet is less expensive than the meat diet and with the price of gas going up, I think meat will become even more expensive - that is unless the government keeps on subsiding even more from our tax money!
  4. Nothing could be further from the truth. Meat is the hardest thing to digest- which is why most of the U.S. is on some prescription medication for heartburn or acid reflux. Raw vegetables contain enzymes, which naturally aid digestion, and insoluble fiber, which cleans out the digestive tract.
  5. Well I have to say, humans are pretty bad at breaking down cellulose. (that's why cows have all those stomachs!) If you eat vegetables with lots of cellulose, I believe your cousin could have a point. Buuuut that cousin seems to just be blowing smoke up your butt. I'm vegan and have never had a problem with my digestive tract. In fact, because of all the healthy fiber you get in a vegan/vegetarian diet, you become MORE regular! Hooray!!! ps-it's not expensive at all=)
